Color Guard
Cadets perform color guard duties on a rotational basis for home football games, basketball games, parades, and other functions determined by the professor of military science as appropriate. Service on the color guard teaches military drill and respect for the national colors and places the cadets in the public view.
Ranger Challenge Team
An elite group of select cadets who specialize in small unit tactical training, weapon proficiency, survival skills, land navigation, and other combat skills. The Ranger team competes in the Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition. Cadets who have participated in a Ranger Challenge meet wear the Ranger flash on the distinctive black beret and a Ranger Challenge tab on the uniforms. Ranger Challenge training includes:
Military Tactics: patrols, raids, ambushes, radio communications, equipment, writing operations orders, rifle marksmanship, land navigation, and stream crossing.
The Ranger Challenge Team consists of a nine-member team with one alternate that will represent the PVAMU Panther Battalion during the annual Ranger Challenge competition and all head-to-head meets.
Ranger cadets must maintain proficiency in military subject and contribute to functions of the team. Qualification in all of the above criteria is to be reviewed by the Ranger Team commander and the Ranger advisor.
National Society of Pershing Rifles
A military organization originally established as a drill company. The scope of activities conducted by the Pershing Rifles has expanded to include tactical training, basic military skill, team building, and military social functions. The Pershing Rifles are now organized as a military “fraternity” open to both men and women. Leadership training and the development of the highest ideals of the military profession are the cornerstones of the Pershing Rifles organization. Any student interested in gaining a more in-depth knowledge of military subjects is encouraged to join. Members of the Pershing Rifles wear the distinctive purple and white fourragere and the black beret when in the class “A” uniform.
