PURPOSE & GOALS

The Purpose of the Department is to provide quality instruction, research, service and out-reach programs that foster knowledge, appreciation and experience that will prepare graduates to meet the challenges of their educational goals. Through a comprehensive program of graduate courses, and practical experiences students will be prepared as facilitators of teachers and as professional decision makers who can assist all learners in meeting expected learner outcomes.

DEGREES OFFERED

The Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling offers programs of study leading to the Master of Science in Education and the Master of Education degrees with program concentrations in Educational Administrations, Instructional Supervision, Counseling and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling.

EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION

The Educational Administration Program is designed to prepare educators for leadership positions in learner-centered schools. The program vigorously addresses two areas of concern: (1) the critical shortage of effective educational leaders in the field and (2) the constant increase in the number of students in public schools. By providing opportunities for teachers and other school personnel to advance to leadership positions, the program focuses on bringing renewed vigor and vision to a changing school environment that is learner-centered.

COUNSELING PROGRAM

The Counseling Program is intended for persons who wish to engage in counseling in school and non-school settings. The program also provides a foundation for advanced study in the helping professions.

PRINCIPAL STANDARD CERTIFICATION
(Formally known as Mid-Management Certification)

The Principal Standard Certificate issued by the State Board for Educator Certification requires a master’s degree, a valid Texas Teacher Certificate, three years of teaching experience, completion of 45 hours of specific administrative course work and a passing score on the TExES Examination #68.

COUNSELING CERTIFICATE

For the Professional Counselor Certificate issued by the State Board for Educator Certification, requirements are two years of teaching experience, Master's Degree, completion of required graduate work in counseling and a passing score on TExES Examination # 152.

LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR (LPC)

The Counseling Program meets the accreditation requirements of the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors. The course work and practicum hours earned in the Master's Degree will count toward the 48 graduate semester hours of course requirements outlined by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors. Students should consult their academic advisor for additional requirements for the LPC.

OFF-CAMPUS LOCATIONS

The Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling offers courses leading to the Masters Degree in Educational Administration at the University Center - Woodlands. Courses are also offered at the Northwest Campus(1960 area) in both Educational Administration and Counseling. Classes are offered at the Northwest site 4 evenings per week during the fall and spring terms.

ANNUAL CONFERENCES

The Annual Legal Issues Conference is designed to provide practical strategies for addressing legal concerns in Public Schools. The conference is held during the third week of October. The Annual Counseling Conference on Ethics is designed to provide students, professional counselors and other professionals with relevant information on key ethical issues in counseling practice. This conference attracts distinguished scholars as presenters and is held during the spring semester.
